Based on the strong growth witnessed over the last decade, the potential for expanding trade and investment links between Australia and Russia is enormous.

Despite the challenges of the global financial crisis, Russia is returning to growth, while the Australian economy remains one of the most resilient and fastest growing in the developed world. Both countries have a wealth of natural resources and skilful workforces, but both countries also face the challenge of managing change and building a broader economic base. In this sense, we have a lot to learn from each other.

Through the Austrade.ru website and Austrade-led initiatives such as trade missions, business networking and targeted promotions, Austrade is helping to build greater understanding and stronger ties between Australian and Russian businesses. Many companies using this site and attending trade events are potentially well matched as trading partners. We expect a significant volume of new business to result from increased knowledge about what each country has to offer.

In recent years, trade between Australia and Russia has changed markedly. Traditional commodity exports such as wheat and wool have decreased. In their place, sophisticated new products such as mining equipment and services, medical devices, education services, tourism, processed foods, premium wine and telecommunications products and services have begun to penetrate the Russian market. This website reflects these new realities while also addressing existing strengths in resources and primary industry.

Austrade's mission is to boost trade and investment between Australia and Russia by introducing innovative Australian companies to potential business partners, clients and distributors in Russia. In 2008-09, Austrade’s Moscow and Vladivostok offices helped 156 Australian businesses achieve outcomes across a broad range of sectors. We expect many more such examples in the years to come.
